The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. Bandung - Merdunya alunan suara angklung dengan penambahan ritmis dari bas, gendang kadangkala diiringi gitar berpadu jadi komposisi bermagnet yang menggugah rasa cinta terhadap musik tradisional. Kelompok ini memang mampu menyajikan harmoni yang bisa melesatkan mereka terbang menjelajahi Eropa.
 
Kelompok Paduan Angklung SMA 3 Bandung atau KPA 3, nama besar mereka sudah tak bisa dikata, baik untuk dunia pendidikan maupun kontribusinya dalam mengangkat nama angklung sebagai musik tradisional bangsa.
 
Tak kurang dari 370 penampilan mereka ikuti baik lokal maupun skala internasional. Dalam setiap festival yang mereka ikuti, penghargaan dalam angka tiga besar selalu mereka dapatkan.
 
Perjalanan ke negara-negara Eropa sendiri dimulai pada tahun 2002. Mereka menamakan penjelajahan mereka ke luar negeri dengan nama Expand The Sound of Angklung. Pada tahun 2002 tersebut mereka mengikuti Folkfestival di Gannat Prancis dan di Moerbeke-Waas, Belgia.
 
Perjalanan yang paling bersejarah sampai saat ini mungkin perjalanan ke Eropa di tahun 2004. Saat itu mereka kekurangan dana untuk membiayai perjalanan selama 40 hari untuk mengikuti International Festival of Mountain Folklore XXXIII di Zakopane, Polandia. Maka, anggota KPA 3 pun jatuh bangun mencari dana di sela perjalanan mereka untuk menutupi kekurangan tersebut.
 
Keringat mereka tak sia-sia. Penghargaan juara 1 kategori musisi dan juara II kategori solois berhasil disabet. Perjalanan dengan kesan yang mendalam itu pun terekam dalam sebuah buku berjudul 40 Days in Europe yang dirilis 2007 lalu.
 
Menurut alumni KPA 3 yang juga pelatih KPA 3, Jiwo, awalnya pagelaran-pagelaran di luar negeri itu merupakan usaha dari KPA sendiri.
 
"Kami mencari-cari festival musik di luar negeri lalu mengajukan proposal untuk mengikuti festival tersebut," jelas Jiwo.
 
Langkah mereka berekspansi keluar pun selalu mendapat apresiasi yang bagus dari para penikmat seni Eropa dengan hasil standing appaluse. Musik angklung yang tradisional dipenetrasikan dengan musik-musik kontemporer. Lagu-lagu tradisional, lagu pop, klasik sampai top 40 (BACA: Top Fourthy) pun mereka eksplorasi. Sampai saat ini mereka KPA 3 memiliki sekitar 250 repertoar.
 
"Kami mengeksplorasi sendiri-sendiri. Bisa dikatakan turun temurun dari alumni ke alumni," tutur Jiwo.
 
Di akhir Juli ini tepatnya, 20-25 Juli, KPA akan memberangkatkan satu timnya untuk mengikuti Internasional Society for Music Education di Bologna Italia. Sebelumnya mereka pun akan mengikuti festival dan konser di Yunani.
 
Sedangkan 19 Juli mendatang, tim lainnya akan menggelar konser di Gedung Sunan Ambu STSI Bandung, Jalan Buah Batu.
 
Expand the Sound of Angklung kali ini sepertinya akan lebih mantap. Tak hanya gubahan repertoar, mereka pun akan memadukannya dengan koreografi khas Indonesia berupa tarian tradisional.
