<<< Welcome to Angklung Web Institute (AWI)! This website is a medium of information exchange about angklung knowledge and competence, especially diatonic angklung in orchestral composition. The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. Until now, angklung still has to face many challenges of identity to be acknowledged as one of world’s standard music instruments. One major problem is that there is no firm standard yet in constructing, tuning, forming, playing, and compositing angklung. Another problem is that until today, an angklung music community as a media of education and industrialization of the angklung music hasn’t been founded yet. Through this website we would like to ask you who have a great concern to the development of angklung to pass this piece of information to the world in order to support this developing music instrument. Through this website we would like to convey an angklung-ical activity to an angklung team or community and hopefully someday the industrialization of angklung can be realized. PEMUDA ASING PERTUNJUKKAN SENI SUNDA (Kompas, 30 Juli 2007)

BANDUNG, KOMPAS--Sebanyak 13 pemuda asing dari berbagai negara mempertunjukkan seni Sunda di Saung Angklung Udjo. Senin (30/7) sore mereka mempertunjukan pencak silat di hadapan puluhan turis dari Belanda.

Para pemuda asing tersebut berasal dari Australia, Kamboja, Cook Islands, Fiji, India, kiribati, Indonesia, Selandia Baru, Filipina, Solomon, Afrika Selatan, Thailand, dan Timor Leste.

Mereka amat antusias mempertunjukkan pencak silat. Ebrahim dari Afrika Selatan yang sehari-hari bekerja sebagai penari profesional di negaranya menarikan pencak silat dengans uka cita.

Gurmeet Singhpaada dari India mengatakan pencak silat merupakan seni bela diri yang sangat fantastik dan tidak ditemukan di negaranya. Meskipun pencak silat sudah dikenal di berbagai negara, Gurmeet mengaku baru mengenal sekaligus belajar pencak silat di Saung Angklung Udjo Bandung dalam program Indonesian Art and Culture Scholarship 2007.

“Saking semangatnya kami belajar pencak silat sendiri setiap pagi,” ujar Gurmeet. Ia dan para pemuda asing lainnya mempelajari arumba, angklung, calung, masakan Sunda, pencak silat, dan lainnya selama dua bulan.

Taufik Hidayat, Pimpinan Saung Angklung Udjo mengatakan program tersebut merupakan program Departemen Luar Negeri untuk membangun diplomasi melalui seni budaya dengan negara-negara lain. Tempat belajar bagi peserta beasiswa ini ada di Bandung, Solo, Bali, dan Yogyakarta.
