SGI-INDONESIA HOLDS FIRST PEACE CULTURE FESTIVAL (Soka Gakkai International, July 10, 2003) |

On July 5 and 6, SGI-Indonesia hosted its first Peace Culture Festival at a theater in Taman Mini Park, southern Jakarta, Indonesia's capital.
Approximately 700 members performed for an audience of 2,200. Guests
included: Culture and Tourism Minister I Gede Ardika; Education
Minister Malik Fadjar; former Minister of Health and Social Welfare
Achmad Sujudi; and former Minister of Settlement and Regional
Development Erna Witoelar. An SGI delegation from Japan, led by SGI
General Director Eiichi Wada, and SGI representatives from Malaysia,
Singapore and Thailand, also attended.
Indonesia is composed of 17,000 large and small islands. Each region has unique and rich cultural traditions. Mr. Ardika opened the festival and expressed his affinity for the SGI's worldwide cultural activities, which are based on the spirit of humanism and tolerance. Performances included: Bali island folk dances; a classical Indian dance; an Angklung performance (bamboo musical instrument, typical of West Java); and a drama-dance called "Sendratari" based on Indonesian myth. "AB Three," the most popular Indonesian women pop vocal trio; Yo Kano, a pianist and SGI-USA Arts Division member; and Indonesia's populist poet WS Rendra, were guest performers. |
