IS IT NECESSARY TO ADD OTHER INSTRUMENTS IN AN ANGKLUNG ORCHESTRA? |
The founding father of angklung, Daeng Soetigna added some other music instruments in the angklung orchestra, according to the genre of the music. The most commonly played additional instruments are accompagnement (along with the co-accompagnement), contra-bass (usually it is picked to indicate the beat, but it is also scrapped), and cymbals. On several occasions the contra-bass can be replaced by bamboo-bass (big bamboo tubes; we hit it to make a bass tone).
A combination of these instruments is sufficient for a good angklung orchestra, according to the concept of Daeng Soetigna.

The other instruments can also be played, according to the genre of music and the requirement, as long as they don’t cover the sound and the aesthetic of the music of angklung. Angklung and the additional instruments should be balanced, both in volume and in timbre.
