The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. Diplomasi Angklung Berhasil Masuk ke Afrika Selatan

Untuk pertama kalinya angklung masuk ke Afrika Selatan dibawa oleh isteri Konsul Jenderal R.I. di Cape Town, Abdul Nasir, pada 1999. Setelah Felicia Lisch, guru piano anak mereka mendapat kesempatan belajar angklung di IKIP Bandung selama 7 minggu, angklung dimainkan oleh anak-anak sekolah di Cape Town, dan bahkan masuk dalam kurikulum Sekolah Lanjutan Pertama di sana.

Yang Pertama

Untuk pertama kali Felicia memperkenalkan kepada murid-muridnya yang ketika itu rata-rata berusia 13 tahun.  Kini mereka sudah berusia 15 tahun.

Sebagai guru, Felicia Lisch ingin sekali mengajarkan musik dengan peralatan yang sederhana. Lalu ia bertanya kepada Konjen Abdul Nasir, alat musik apa yang dapat dimainkan anak-anak. Angklung, jawab Konjen. Tentu saja Felicia terperangah, karena belum ada bayangan di benaknya.  Konjen menjanjikan isterinya akan membawa alat itu.

Barang aneh apa ini?

Pada 17 Agustus 1999, Felicia mendapat angklung itu dan selama dua  hari ia memperhatikan alat itu dari atas ke bawah, dari samping kiri ke kanan dan sebaliknya.  Dan ketik ia memainkannya, Konjen bilang bukan begitu.  Lalu Felicia menanyakan apakah mungkin dia belajar memainkan angklung di Indonesia dan mengajarkannya kepada anak-anak, tanya sambil bergurau.

Obsesi Mengajarkan Angklung

Setahun kemudian, tepatnya 10 Juni 2000, Felicia berangkat ke Bandung, untuk belajar angklung di IKIP selama 7 minggu.  Kembali ke Capte Town ia telah membawa bekal, juga filsafat yang didapat dari pencipta angklung, Daeng Sutigna. "Hidup ini tidak ada yang lebih. Semua orang sama.  Tidak ada yang lebih pintar, tidak ada yang lebih bodoh."  Filsafat inilah yang diajarkan kepada murid-muridnya dalam memainkan musik angklung. Ia menekankan kehamronisan dan kerja sama yang baik, saling memperhatikan satu dengan lainnya dan saling menolong.  Itulah sebabnya ia merasa bangga. Dengan angklung ia telah mencapai hasil, anak bandel, anak yang nakal, anak yang tidak disiplin, dapat bekerja sama memainkan lagu-lagu dengan angklung.  "Kalau satu anak saja tidak memperhatikan nada yang dimainkannya, ia akan ketinggalan dan lagu tidak akan jadi," katanya kepada Yanti Mualim di Cape Town. Ia sangat terobsesi untuk melatih anak-anak ini menjadi pengajar kelak. Karena itu sering ia menyelenggarakan lokakarya angklung.

Anak-anak Senang

Robin, Theo dan teman-temannya, senang sekali memainkan angklung ini, lebih-lebih mendengarkan nadanya.  Mereka senang, karena merekalah yang pertama memainkan angklung di Afrika.  Mereka belajar dengan sungguh-sungguh, karena dengan bermain angklung mereka boleh menampilkan kebolehan mereka dan tentu saja banyak negara mereka kunjungi.  Mereka dapat memainkan lagu Indonesia Raya, walaupun "kami tidak tahu arti kata-katanya.  Tapi kami mengerti musiknya," jawab Robin, Theo dan teman-teman lainnya. Di samping lagu INdonesia, mereka memainkan juga lagu-lagu mereka sendiri dan lagu Barat lain.

Upaya Konsul Jenderal

Sejak adanya Konsul Jenderal di Cape Town, kebudayaan Indonesia dalam arti yang luas mulai lebih dikenal kembali, karena di kawasan ini banyak orang Indonesia yang dulu dibawa kemari sebagai tawanan, sebagai budak dan sebagai pekerja. Ketika Konjen Tupuk Sutrisno menyaksikan untuk pertama kalinya mereka menari, ia merasa heran, karena bukan tarian Indonesia.  Ia mengatakan:

Membantu Penari dan Koreografer

Maka lahirlah penari dan guru tari  Indonesia di Cape Town, dan tari Lilin, Tari Bali, Tari Sunda dan Tari Betawi pun muncul di Cape Town dan Afrika Selatan.  "Saya memperkenalkan ini dan angklung merupakan kelanjutan usaha Konjen sesudah saya, yaitu Pak Abdul Nasir dan Konjen terbaru adalah Ibu Moeniroh Sri Rahayu Suradi."  Bahkan sekarang Tari Saman sangat populer.  Banyak anak Afrika Selatan ikut mempelajari tari ini.

Diplomasi Kerupuk

Konjen Moeniroh mengatakan, "Kami di Cape Town memanfaatkan diplomasi angklung, kerupuk dan makanan Indonesia lain di samping juga tarian.  Sayang," katanya, "batik yang dikenakan oleh Nelson Mandela tidak diikuti pemakaiannya oleh rakyat, karena ada keengganan rakyat pada pemimpin yang sangat kharismatik dan dihormati.

Batik di Afrika Selatan dirintis oleh orang-orang Belanda yang memanfaatkan motif dan teknik perbatikan Indonesia."  Agaknya angklung akan menjalar ke mana-mana di Afrika, tinggal bagaimana usaha KBRI dan Konsulat Jenderal di beberapa negara Afrika memanfaatkan momen yang sudah terbentuk ini.
