The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. ImageLiputan6.com, Bandung: Bicara tentang angklung sudah pasti tak lepas dari nama Udjo Ngalagena. Maklum, jasa almarhum terhadap keberadaan musik tradisional asal Tanah Pasundan ini sangat besar. Dia mendirikan pusat pelatihan, pembuatan, dan pergelaran musik angklung. Tidak hanya membuat terkenal di Tanah Air, tapi juga hingga luar negeri.


Tak mengherankan, jika hingga akhir hayatnya, Udjo dikenal sebagai tokoh seni angklung Jawa Barat. Sam Udjo, anak almarhum mengatakan, ayahnya adalah sosok yang sederhana. Dia belajar membuat angklung dari seorang guru di Kota Bandung, Daeng Sutigna. "Kecintaan terhadap angklung beliau tak pernah lepas. Sampai membikin angklung," kata Sam.

Lebih jauh anak ketujuh Udjo ini mengatakan, sang ayah memberi pesan agar terus melestarikan angklung yang mulai jarang diminati masyarakat ini. Sam bertekad tak menyia-nyiakan amanat sang ayah. "Kami berkewajiban melestarikan angklung karena masyarakat Bandung pada umumnya juga senang terhadap alat musik tradisional ini," ujar dia.

Usaha keras Udjo Ngalagena didukung keluarganya mampu mengharumkan nama bangsa di kancah internasional. Pasalnya murid-murid di Saung Angklung Udjo kerap diundang mengisi acara ke luar negeri. Tak pelak, tamu yang datang ke padepokan yang terletak di Jalan Padasuka, Kota Kembang ini kerap dikunjungi wisatawan mancanegara.

Di Saung Udjo, tamu yang datang tak sekadar disuguhi cara membuat angklung oleh para perajin yang telah sangat terlatih. Baik turis domestik maupun mancanegara diberi kesempatan mengikuti latihan dan menyaksikan langsung pertunjukan alunan bilah bambu yang disusun sedemikian rupa. Komitmen Udjo sekeluarga akhirnya diakui sebagai aset nasional yang harus terus dipelihara.

Di balik ketenaran yang membalut nama padepokan angklung Udjo, Sam mengaku menemui beberapa kendala. Di antaranya bambu yang kurang berkualitas karena hama. Perhatian warga yang minim juga dituding menghambat laju popularitas alunan bilah bambu ini. Ditambah lagi kurangnya program kesenian di media massa elektronik juga dianggap melunturkan semangat generasi muda untuk menekuni seni musik tradisional ini.

Kendati demikian, Sam tak mau menyerah. Dia sedikit menyimpan harapan kalau angklung sebagai alat pendidikan musik yang pernah ditetapkan oleh Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Tahun 1998 bisa terus jalan. Dengan demikian, generasi muda tidak hanya mahir memainkan musik modern, tapi juga bisa mengangkat angklung sebagai seni musik tradisional sehingga bisa diakui dunia.(JUM/Tim Usaha Anda)
