The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. Until now, angklung still has to face many challenges of identity to be acknowledged as one of world’s standard music instruments. Through this website we would like to ask you who have a great concern to the development of angklung to pass this piece of information to the world in order to support this developing music instrument. Through this website we would like to convey an angklung-ical activity to an angklung team or community and hopefully someday the industrialization of angklung can be realized. ImageSekitar tahun 1935 seorang Music Supervisor di Pasadena California Music School, Lilian Mohr Fox, membuat suatu auto-harp hasil modifikasi alat musik Tradisional Jerman. Alat musik ini cepat digemari terutama oleh anak-anak karena sangat mudah dimainkan. Kejadian ini seiring dengan diperkenalkannya angklung diatonis oleh Daeng Sutigna di Indonesia tahun 1937. Bapak Daeng Sutigna ini (lebih suka disebut Padaeng) merintis modernisasi angklung atas dasar pengalamannya sebagai guru di Kuningan. Beliau memikirkan suatu alat musik yang cocok untuk anak-anak didiknya.

Saat itu Padaeng merasa iba melihat angklung yang tadinya alat musik 'mulia' kini kian dilupakan orang. Angklung malah digunakan oleh para barangmaen (pengemis), sehingga siapa saja yang membawa angklung dicemooh sebagai tukang ngamen.

Usaha mempopulerkan angklung ternyata mendapat hambatan karena sulitnya memperoleh angklung. Angklung telah punah!

Untunglah Padaeng berhasil menjumpai Aki Jaya, pembuat angklung yang telah jompo. Berkat bujukan Padaeng, Aki Jaya bersedia mengajarkan cara-cara mebuat angklung.

Angklung yang dibuat Padaeng ternyata lain dari biasanya. Tidak lagi dalam laras salendro atau pelog, tetapi telah bertangganada diantonis. Disamping itu, Padaeng berhadap anak-anak akan lebih menyukainya.

Harapan Padaeng menjadi kenyataan. Anak asuhnya yang terdiri atas para Pandu sangat menggemari dan cukup 'fanatik' terhadap musik bambu ini. Meskipun pada awalnya latihan secara sembunyi-sembunyi dan tidak ada maksud dipentaskan, tak urung terdengar juga adanya angklung modern ini. Suara pro dabn kontra bermunculan. Namun didasari keyakinan bahwa angklung sarat dengan unsur pendidikan, Padaeng terus melatihkannya pada anak-anak didiknya.

Angklung Padaeng makin menarik perhatian, bahkan sempat ditampilkan dalam suatu acara di Komperensi Linggarjati dan seterusnya sering tampil dalam acara kenegaraan.

Tahun 1961 misalnya dalam pembukaan PON V, diselenggarakan angklung massal dengan seribu pemain. Angklung massal lainnya yang  masih segar dalam ingatakan kita Peringatan HUT Konferensi Asia Afrika (KAA) ke-25 1980 di Bandung, Jambore Nasional 1981 di Cibubur, Haepenas 1984 di Senayan. Khusus untuk Peringatan Konferensi Asia Afrika (KAA), angklung massal kembali dimainkan pada HUT ke-30 tahun 1985 dan ke-40 1995.

Perkembangan angklung ternyta tidak hanya di Indonesia. University of Missouri misalnya telah memiliki angklung yang dibuat Padaeng 1968. Bahkan Ayip Rosidi dalam sebuah harian pernah menyebut bahwa di Austria angklung tengah dipelajari untuk semacam musik klasik.

Akankah kita sebagai pemilik kesenian ini, tertinggal dalam pengetahuannya?
